What grade do I need?

Work out the grade you need on the pending assessment to reach your target.

You need to score 5.75 on the pending assessment.

This grade average calculator adds up and weighs your grades instantly, whether as a simple average, weighted by percentage (when each exam or assignment is worth a % of the final grade) or weighted by credits (common for semester or GPA-style averages). It works with the most common scales — 0 to 5, 0 to 10, 0 to 20 and 0 to 100 — each with a sensible default passing grade you can change.

It also answers the question students search for at the end of a term: “what grade do I need on the final exam to pass, or to reach the average I want?” Just enter your target average and the weight of the pending assessment.

How to use

  1. 1Choose the mode: simple average, weighted by percentage or weighted by credits.
  2. 2Pick your grading scale (0–5, 0–10, 0–20 or 0–100) and the minimum passing grade.
  3. 3Add one row per assessment with its grade and, if it applies, its weight.
  4. 4Check your average and, if one assessment is still pending, use the “What grade do I need?” section.

Simple, percentage-weighted or credit-weighted average

A simple average gives every grade the same weight, and works when all assessments count equally. A percentage-weighted average is used when the instructor splits the final grade into percentages (say, exam 40%, assignments 30%, participation 30%). A credit-weighted average is the usual way to calculate a semester or overall GPA-style average, where each course counts according to its credit hours.

How the “grade needed” calculation works

To find the grade you still need, the calculator uses the grades and weights already entered, the weight of the pending assessment and the average you want to reach, and solves for the missing grade using this idea: the final average is the sum of all weighted grades (including the missing one) divided by the total weight. If the required grade is above the top of the scale, the calculator tells you the target is not reachable with that weight.

Common grading scales

Every country and institution uses a different scale; these are the typical passing grades the calculator sets by default, though you can change them:

  • 0–5 scale: usually passes at 3.0.
  • 0–10 scale: usually passes at 5.
  • 0–20 scale: usually passes at 10 or 11 depending on the institution.
  • 0–100 scale: usually passes at 60.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a weighted average?

Multiply each grade by its weight (percentage or credits), add those results up, and divide by the sum of the weights. For example, with a 40%-weight exam graded 4 and a 60%-weight assignment graded 3: (4×40 + 3×60) ÷ 100 = 3.4.

What grade do I need to pass the semester?

Enter your current grades with their weights, set the minimum passing grade as your target, and enter the weight of the assessment you still have pending: the calculator tells you the score you need on it.

What if my percentages don't add up to 100?

The calculator warns you if the weights don't add up to 100%, but it still calculates the average over whatever total weight you entered, in case some assessments haven't happened yet.

Can I use this to calculate my GPA?

Yes — use “weighted by credits”: each row is a course, the grade is that course's final grade, and the weight is its credit hours.

What's the difference between a weighted and a simple average?

A simple average gives every grade equal weight. A weighted average gives more weight to the assessments that count more (a final exam usually weighs more than a homework set), so it better reflects how the final grade is actually calculated.
