What determines voice quality
The reader uses the voices already installed on your operating system or browser; it doesn't generate its own. That's why naturalness and the number of available languages vary from device to device: Chrome and Edge on Windows or macOS usually ship several English and Spanish voices, while other browsers offer fewer options.
The tool defaults to a voice matching the language you're viewing the page in, but you can switch it at any time from the dropdown.
Speed, pitch and highlighting
Speed controls how many words per minute the voice reads; a value of 1 is that voice's normal pace, and you can lower it to review more carefully or raise it to get through a long text faster. Pitch changes the voice's tone without affecting speed. While playing, the sentence currently being read stays highlighted, so you can follow along visually or pick up reading exactly where you left off.

Why don't I see any voices, or why do they sound odd?
Voices come from your operating system or browser, not from this tool. If you don't see the voice you expect, check the voice packs installed in your device's accessibility settings, or try Chrome or Edge, which usually ship with more variety.
Is my text sent to a server to generate the speech?
No. Reading uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis (SpeechSynthesis); the text is processed locally and never leaves your device.
Can I change the speed and pitch of the voice?
Yes, both are adjustable independently with sliders: speed ranges from 0.5x to 2x and pitch from 0 to 2, on top of the playback volume.
Which browser works best with the narrator?
Chrome and Edge offer the best support for sentence highlighting and the widest range of available voices. Safari and Firefox also work, though usually with fewer voices installed by default.
Can I pick up reading where I left off?
Yes. Use the previous-word and next-word buttons to move through the text, or simply pause and press play again: reading resumes from that point.
